Oral Dutasteride for Hair Restoration
What is Oral Dutasteride for hair loss?
Oral dutasteride is a prescription tablet used off-label for male pattern hair loss. It works by blocking both Type 1 and Type 2 forms of the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, the hormone that miniaturises hair follicles. Oral finasteride only blocks the Type 2 form, which is why dutasteride suppresses DHT more completely.
Dutasteride is not FDA-approved for hair loss in the US. Its FDA approval is for enlarged prostate. Use for hair loss is off-label. It is approved for hair loss in South Korea and Japan.
Does Oral Dutasteride work for hair loss?
Who it applies to
- Men with pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
- Prescription only, off-label use for hair loss
- Requires ongoing use (hair loss returns after stopping)
Who it does not apply to
- Women of childbearing age (contraindicated, birth defect risk similar to finasteride)
- Men without access to a doctor who prescribes it off-label
- People with pattern hair loss caused by conditions other than androgenetic alopecia
What to look for when buying
Every spec brands use in marketing — and what the research actually says.
| What brands market | Research verdict | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Dutasteride vs finasteride efficacy | ✅ Matters | Dutasteride 0.5mg produced significantly greater hair count and width than finasteride 1mg at 24 weeks across 917 men (Gubelin Harcha 2014). Meta-analysis of 3 RCTs (576 men) confirmed the same finding. |
| Dose: 0.5mg daily vs intermittent | ✅ Matters | 0.5mg daily is the most studied and most effective dose. Thrice-weekly 0.5mg showed greater improvement than twice-weekly, but did not significantly outperform daily finasteride in one pilot trial (60 men). |
| FDA approval status | ✅ Matters | Dutasteride is not FDA-approved for hair loss in the US. Finasteride 1mg is the only FDA-approved oral treatment for male pattern hair loss. |
| Sexual side effect risk | ✅ Matters | Both dutasteride and finasteride carry similar sexual side effect risks. The 2019 meta-analysis found comparable rates between the two drugs. |
| Generic vs branded | ❌ Not researched | Active ingredient is identical at equivalent doses. |
What research cannot tell you
These questions are not answered by any qualified study in our database.
- Whether dutasteride''s greater efficacy justifies off-label use for your situation (requires a prescribing doctor)
- Long-term safety of dutasteride for hair loss beyond studied periods
- Whether results differ between men who have not responded to finasteride vs treatment-naive men
- How dutasteride compares to non-pharmaceutical options like red light therapy or PRP in a direct trial
- Whether intermittent dosing reduces side effects without significantly reducing efficacy
Research behind this page
All studies are independent systematic reviews or meta-analyses.
| Study | Score | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Dutasteride vs finasteride in 917 men | 7/10 | Dutasteride 0.5mg significantly outperformed finasteride 1mg on hair count and width at 24 weeks; dose-dependent effect |
| Dutasteride vs finasteride meta-analysis | 7/10 | Dutasteride produced greater total hair count and better photographic scores than finasteride across 3 RCTs (576 men) |
| Dutasteride vs finasteride systematic review | 5/10 | Dutasteride superior in most studies but no clear high-quality evidence to definitively support its use in male pattern hair loss |
| Dutasteride twice or three times weekly | 5/10 | Intermittent dutasteride increased hair growth but thrice-weekly did not significantly outperform daily finasteride; pilot study only |
What the research says about common buyer questions
Is dutasteride better than finasteride?+
In direct trials, yes. Dutasteride 0.5mg daily produced greater hair count and hair width increases than finasteride 1mg in a large 917-man trial (Gubelin Harcha 2014) and a meta-analysis of 3 RCTs involving 576 men. However, dutasteride is not FDA-approved for hair loss in the US, while finasteride 1mg is. The choice involves weighing greater efficacy against off-label status and requires discussion with a prescribing doctor.
Can I take it less than daily to reduce side effects?+
One pilot trial (60 men) tested dutasteride 0.5mg twice or three times weekly against daily finasteride 1mg. All three regimens increased hair density and diameter. Thrice-weekly dutasteride showed greater improvement than twice-weekly, but did not significantly outperform daily finasteride. This was a small pilot study. It does not confirm that intermittent dosing is as effective as daily dutasteride.
What are the side effects?+
Sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory changes) occur with dutasteride at rates similar to finasteride. Both drugs carry this risk as a consequence of DHT reduction. Dutasteride has a longer half-life than finasteride, meaning it remains in the body longer after stopping. This is relevant if side effects occur.
What happens if I stop taking it?+
Hair loss returns, as with finasteride. Because dutasteride has a longer half-life, the offset after stopping is slower than with finasteride.
